Teachers' union holds protest as civil service job transfers begin

Members of the Federation of Secondary Schoolteachers (OLME) are due to protest at noon on Monday in central Athens as the government prepares to transfer 2,000 educators from their positions.

Greece has to place 25,000 civil servants in a labor reserve by the end of the year as part of its commitments to the troika and 2,000 teachers will be taken from technical and vocational high schools after the scrapping of several departments.

The government said that more than half the teachers will be placed in positions at the Health Ministry. If positions are not found for the teachers in the next eight months, they will be fired.

OLME said it would take legal action to prevent the transfers.
